Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about the Smoke Tracker app, privacy, and getting support on your smoke-free journey.
Getting Started
How do I download and install the Smoke Tracker app?
The Smoke Tracker app is available for free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Simply search for "Smoke Tracker" or use the download links on our website. The app works on iOS 12.0+ and Android 7.0+.
Do I need to create an account to use the app?
No account is required! The app works entirely offline and stores all your data locally on your device. This ensures complete privacy - we never see or store your personal smoking data.
Is the app really free?
Yes, the core features of Smoke Tracker are completely free. This includes logging cigarettes, viewing basic statistics, and tracking your progress. We also offer premium features like advanced analytics and data export for users who want additional insights.
Using the App
How do I log a cigarette?
Simply open the app and tap the "+" button or "Log Cigarette" button on the home screen. You can add context like your mood, location, and what triggered the urge. The more information you provide, the better insights you'll get about your smoking patterns.
What if I forget to log a cigarette?
You can add cigarettes retroactively by tapping "Add Entry" and selecting a past time. It's normal to forget sometimes - the app is designed to be flexible and non-judgmental about your tracking habits.
How does trigger tracking work?
When logging a cigarette, you can select from common triggers like stress, boredom, social situations, or habits. Over time, the app analyzes these patterns to show you which triggers are most common for you, helping you develop targeted coping strategies.
Can I edit or delete entries?
Yes! You can edit or delete any entry by tapping on it in your history. We believe in giving you full control over your data while maintaining an accurate picture of your smoking patterns.
Privacy & Data
Is my data private? How does local storage work?
Yes, completely private! All your smoking and vaping data is stored in an encrypted SQLite database directly on your device. We never upload, sync, or store any of your personal smoking information on our servers. This means your habits, triggers, and notes are 100% private and only accessible to you. Even we cannot see your data - it's technically impossible because it only exists on your device.
Does the app comply with GDPR and CCPA?
Yes! Since all your data is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to our servers, the app complies with GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy regulations by design. We don't collect, process, or sell any personal smoking data. You have complete control over your data at all times: view it, export it (CSV), or delete it anytime.
What data does the app collect?
The app stores all smoking/vaping data locally on your device in an encrypted SQLite database. This includes cigarette/vape logs, triggers, notes, and preferences. Optional anonymous crash reports and analytics (which you can disable in Settings) help us improve app stability. Your smoking data never leaves your device. Third-party services like RevenueCat (subscriptions) and Firebase (optional analytics) do NOT have access to your smoking data.
What third-party services does the app use?
The app uses RevenueCat for subscription management and Firebase for optional anonymous crash reporting. These services do not have access to your smoking data, which stays on your device. Payment processing is handled securely by Google Play. You can opt out of analytics in Settings → Privacy → Disable Analytics.
Can I export my data?
Yes! You can export your smoking log as a CSV file, which you can then share with healthcare providers, import into other apps, or keep as a backup. This feature ensures you always own and control your data.
What happens if I get a new phone?
Since all data is stored locally on your device, you'll need to export your data from your old phone (as a CSV file) before switching. Then you can import it into the app on your new device. We recommend doing regular exports as backups. We intentionally don't offer cloud sync to maintain your privacy.
Why don't you offer cloud sync like other apps?
We believe your smoking habits are deeply personal and should remain private. Cloud sync would require uploading your sensitive data to servers, where it could potentially be accessed by others. Our local-first approach ensures your data stays completely private and under your control.
Can you recover my data if I lose my phone?
No, we cannot recover lost data because we don't store your information on our servers. This is actually a privacy feature - since we don't have your data, no one else can access it either. We recommend regular exports to your email or cloud storage as backup.
Health & Quitting
I'm not ready to quit yet. Can I still use the app?
Absolutely! The app is designed for mindful tracking, not judgment. Many users start by simply understanding their smoking or vaping patterns before making any changes. There's no pressure to quit - the app supports you wherever you are in your journey.
Is this app a medical device or treatment?
No. Smoke Tracker is a wellness tracking tool, not a medical device or treatment. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment for nicotine dependence or any health condition. The app is designed to help you understand your smoking/vaping patterns through self-tracking. For smoking cessation treatment, please consult a licensed healthcare provider who can recommend evidence-based treatments such as behavioral therapy, nicotine replacement therapy, or prescription medications.
Will the app help me quit smoking or vaping?
The app is a tool for awareness and tracking, not a medical treatment. By helping you understand your smoking/vaping patterns and triggers, it can support your quit efforts. However, for the best success, consider combining the app with professional support like quitlines, counseling, nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), or medications as recommended by your healthcare provider.
Does it work with healthcare providers?
Yes! You can export your smoking data as a CSV file to share with your doctor, therapist, or smoking cessation counselor. This helps them understand your patterns and provide better support. However, remember that the app itself is not a medical tool - your healthcare provider should guide your treatment plan.
What if I have a bad day and smoke more than usual?
That's completely normal and part of the process. The app is designed to track your patterns without judgment. Bad days provide valuable data about your triggers and can help you prepare better coping strategies for similar situations in the future.
Are there age restrictions?
Yes, you must be 18 years or older to use Smoke Tracker. The app is not intended for minors.
Does the app track both cigarettes and vaping?
Yes! You can track cigarettes, vape sessions, or both. The app adapts to your needs and helps you understand your nicotine consumption patterns regardless of the form.
